Red Barrel Games
Lionsgate and Canadian video game developer Red Barrels have announced a deal to bring the “Outlast” survival horror series to the big screen.
J.T. Petty, who is heavily involved in the story for the games, will be working on the film’s screenplay while famed horror producer Roy Lee will lead the film adaptation.
Released in 2013, the single-player narrative-driven game revolves around a freelance investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who decides to investigate the remote Mount Massive Asylum – a psychiatric hospital located deep in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado.
Once inside he discovers it’s not so abandoned – rather it has been overrun by homicidal patients. Unfolding in first person, it features stealth mechanics as players have to hide, sneak or even outrun their pursuers.
As the hospital is unlit, and the only way for the player to see while in the dark is through the lens of a camcorder equipped with night vision – a camcorder that will slowly consume batteries – forcing the player to scavenge for additional ones.
The game scored good reviews and is has drawn in around 37 million players worldwide over several games.
