Mario and Luigi Brothership review: Turn-based RPG cartoon fun on the high seas

This double team role-play game is another good effort in Nintendo’s growing stable of hit Switch games.

While it’s not up there with the likes of Odyssey and Super Mario Bros Wonder, the bods at the handheld gaming firm have put a ton of effort into giving gamers a full-fat title to get their teeth into.

The story is all a bit bonkers as you’d imagine.

Mario and Luigi have to combine their forces to save a shattered land, Concordia, by literally plugging dispersed islands back into the mighty Uni-Tree.

That means hunting the high seas for missing island levels, then getting onto them, completing platforming and puzzle sections with a fair old smattering of turn-based fighting against monsters like Zokket and the Extension Corps.

The brothers can work together to defeat enemies

That fighting is the core gameplay of Brothership and if you’ve played a Paper Mario game before you’ll know roughly how it works.

But the difference here is that, as you upgrade your abilities and weapons, Mario and Luigi can combine their brawling abilities to deliver some incredible blows to enemies in side-view hammer and jump attacks.

For example, you can join forces to kick around a Koopa shell like a football until Mario gets the final kick and blasts it at an opponent. This delivers a heavy blow to their life force.

With enemies defeated you then reach a lighthouse at the end of each island and effectively plug that light beam back into the home island and its tree.

The cartoon style works well on screen

The game plays well enough, just like the Paper Marios before, with a near top-down viewpoint for the puzzle sections.

And the visual style is a little different, more cartoony than many of the recent Mario efforts.

The brothers are as cute together as ever and their joint fighting is a highlight.

VERDICT 4/5
